Star Trails (Makhtesh Ramon) – Negev

The earth is constantly spinning on its axis which makes the stars look like they move in circles in the sky. At night we don’t easily see this change but if you leave a camera lens open for even 15 minutes the stars will make trails through the sky.

I wanted to give this a try because I was in a desert with no other sources of light that could pollute my pictures. Unfortunately the night sky was a little cloudy and my lens wasn’t wide enough to get full circles around Polaris so I wasn’t always able to get the full effect. Also, there was a very strong orange light shining from the Be’erot Campgrounds which made my foreground an ugly yellow. Hopefully next time there’ll be better conditions and I’ll be able to get better shots.
