Wadi Ardon (Makhtesh Ramon) – Negev

We arrived at Makhtesh Ramon Friday afternoon (the weekends in Israel are Friday and Saturday) and immediately took the rest of the day to hike through Wadi Ardon (“wadi” is the Arabic term for valley). The first thing you notice in Makhtesh Ramon is how vast and empty the entire area is. One road goes through the makhtesh and the rest is filled with all sorts of different rock formations and more rocks. We started out from our camp site and wandered a little until we ran into a park ranger who told us not to be out after sunset (around 5pm) and gave us a lift in her jeep to the start of the Wadi Ardon trail. From there we walked in a loop along a canyon before heading back to the Beerot campground.
