High Place of Sacrifice – Petra

The High Place of Sacrifice was important for religious ceremonies held in honor of Nabataean gods and possibly for funeral rites. The area near the step altar (4th photo) and open altar (last photo), offer spectacular views of Petra and the mountains below. The High Place of Sacrifice is also an amazing place to watch the sunset.

On our way up we met an orange cat (2nd, 5th photos, which I named Aadel after our current RA). Aadel, like Brad before him, followed us up from the base of the High Place of Sacrifice (1st photo), to the top of the altar where he curiously did not beg for food. Instead he ran off as soon as it got dark.
