Koffler Accelerator – Rehovot

Sometimes declared as the symbol of Rehovot, the Koffler Accelerator was finished on November 9, 1976. Its futuristic architecture can be seen from all over campus and in the city, and at night, the towers are lit up with blue. Although the Department of Nuclear Physics runs some experiments in the accelerator, one Israeli told me that rumors say it was obsolete before construction was even finished because of its many delays (one being due to the Yom Kippur War). An observatory, opened only for special parties and receptions, sits on top of the accelerator, after seven flights of winding stairs looping around one of the towers. (This week the Weizmann is hosting a Harvard-Weizmann Conference on Systems Biology). The interior of the observatory is quite small and looks almost like the bridge of a space ship, but offers amazing views of the campus and Rehovot.
