Over the last week my mom and sister came to visit and stayed mostly in Jerusalem, but made a couple of trips to the Galilee, Dead Sea, and Petra. The region of Galilee (haGalil in Hebrew) is in northern Israel, bordering the West Bank and the Golan Heights, and is starkly different from the rest of Israel: it features green rolling hills and rivers. More famously, the Galilee, and the Sea of Galilee (Kinneret in Hebrew) was the sight of Jesus’s first ministry and where he spent most of his life. Later his apostles lived and taught there.

We spent a day seeing sights in the Galilee (not nearly enough), most of which was spent listening to a tour guide who then would give us 15 minutes to see each place. But the Galilee has a different atmosphere than Jerusalem and Tel Aviv (it’s more like Hobbiton). It’s a beautiful place: it’s immediately less hectic and more quiet, and you can easily see why Jesus chose to start here.
