Our final stop was Yardenit, a baptismal site on the Jordan River (Yarden is Jordan in Hebrew, and is also the name of my advisor at the Weizmann). Although many pilgrims visit it as the site of Jesus’s baptism, it is most likely not (he was baptized at Bethany beyond Jordan (on the other side of the Jordan River, in modern day Jordan)). In any case, Yardenit is a popular baptismal site that offers amazing views of the Jordan River (2-4, 6, 8). At any given time there can be hundreds of Christians being baptized (or renewing their vows) (7). In additional to baptizing Christians, a lot of cat fish and some kind of aquatic gophers (5) live in the river.
