Elijah’s Cave – Haifa

Elijah the prophet, (Eliyahu HaNavi), is revered as a heroic prophet who stressed monotheism and the reality of God. He famously challenged 450 priests of Baal after the Jews turned to idol worship, and after he wins, orders their deaths. Queen Jezebel, not very happy with the death of 450 of her priests, tries to kill Elijah who seeks shelter in a cave. He also later ascends to heaven in a whirlwind and chariot.

We visited the alleged cave where Elijah hid from Jezebel, and although it is not aesthetically impressive, (nor does it really feel like a cave), it was interesting nonetheless. The interior is very small and split into two sections, one for men and one for women, and both contain small libraries for prayer books.
