Tiberias (Tiberiah in Hebrew), was built by Herod Antipas in 18CE and named after the Roman Emperor Tiberius. At the time however, Jews (including Christ), refused to enter the city as it was built on Jewish graves. Later the town was declared pure and it soon became a Jewish hub before it was conquered by Muslims. Now the city is almost all Jewish, and is the main commercial center on the Galilee.
